Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal), washed

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Cook Lentils:

In a pressure cooker, cook the washed lentils with water, turmeric powder, and salt until soft and mushy.

Prepare Tadka:

In a pan, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

Add Ginger-Garlic Paste and Spice Powders:

Add ginger-garlic paste and cook until the raw smell disappears. Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

Introduce Tomatoes:

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil separates from the masala.

Temper Lentils:

Add the tadka to the cooked lentils and mix well. Simmer for a few minutes.
