Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked chickpeas (or 2 cans, drained and rinsed)

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 tomatoes, pureed

  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust according to spice preference)

  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Prepare Chickpeas:

If using canned chickpeas, drain and rinse them. If using dried chickpeas, cook and set aside.

Sauté Onion and Cumin Seeds:

Heat vegetable oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and sauté until they splutter. Add finely chopped onions and cook until golden brown.

Add Spice Paste:

Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili. Sauté for 2 minutes. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and cook for an additional 2 minutes.

Incorporate Tomato Puree:

Pour in the pureed tomatoes. Cook until the oil begins to separate from the masala.

Integrate Chickpeas:

Add the cooked chickpeas to the masala. Stir well to coat the chickpeas evenly.

Simmer and Season:

Add garam masala and salt. Simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Garnish and Serve:

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice or flatbreads.
